A friend's 40th is coming up and nobody wants a club, what do we do instead?

A friend turns 40 next month and nobody wants a club or bottle service. What is the move for eight people who still want a real night out?

Riviera 31 at the Sofitel is what I would book. Live salsa and blues, cover is usually around twenty, and it is a lounge, so nobody has to shout or stand in a line.

Call ahead for eight, they will hold a couple of tables near the band.

Tam O'Shanter, the pub side, not the dining room.

Old Lightning behind the Venice Ale House. It is reservation only and tiny, but for a 40th it beats any club we have been dragged to!!

For a 40th with a real group, I would do Baltaire in Brentwood. It is a proper steakhouse, the room is loud enough to feel like an occasion but you can still hear the person across from you, and they handle a table of eight without making it a project.

Do dinner at eight, let it run long, and if anyone still wants a drink after, you are five minutes from San Vicente.

The Dresden. Booth, martini, done.

I love the Dresden. Their new Zealand rack of lamb and their beef prime rib is legendary. Not cheap, but also not over the top.

The tables are a bit small, but you could put two of them together. Should fit eight people.

EightyTwo in the Arts District is fun. Kinda an arcade bar with pinball, classic games, full bar, food, and it actually works for a group of 8. You can hold a section, play for a couple hours, drink and it never turns into a club.

After that maybe Perch for a more laid-back vibe. Have 2-3 cocktails and call it a night.
