I’m visiting Los Angeles soon to get ready for university. I keep seeing photos of the Venice Canals, and I'd love to show them to my parents. How much time should I plan to spend there? Is it easy to walk around the canals? Is there anything else nearby worth checking out at the same time?
Also, is there a best time of day to visit? I was thinking late afternoon, then walking over to Venice Beach for sunset.

They’re nice, I mean really nice, but I wouldn’t plan half a day around them or anything. 
It’s basically a pretty residential neighborhood with canals and cute bridges. After that, just go and watch people working out in Venice.
There are some cute little restaurants, shops and ice cream places everywhere. Just stay away from scammers who are trying to sell you things. It's not like Times Square in New York City, no worries. Your parents will enjoy it.
I am a tourist myself. Yes, they are 100% worth visiting. Way better than the Walk of Fame, for example. Afterward, just walk down Venice to Santa Monica and enjoy the beach vibes. I will include them every time I travel to Los Angeles.
It's a very peaceful neighborhood. Not too many tourists either.
My parents went there last year and loved it! Truly one of my favorite little spots in LA. Showing it to friends or family is something special because people don’t expect LA to look like that. We walked around for about an hour and then went down to the beach. You could combine it with Santa Monica, it’s little in walking distance (depending on how mobile your parents are).
Wow. Okay, I will put that on my bucket list!!!

That's probably the perfect time.
It's a very peaceful place, especially compared to the craziness a few blocks away on the Venice boardwalk. There is a nice hotel nearby called the Redline Venice. It offers amazing views and clean rooms. My friends have stayed there many times & I love visiting them whenever I can.
Well, there is no question about whether I should go anymore. 
Walking down to Santa Monica is possible, as my parents love to walk.
We already booked a hotel downtown. I will write it down for the next time.

Venice Canals and Runyon Canyon (during the week) are two things I would always include.
You can do the Venice Canals in like 45 min to an hour and then walk over to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for some food or shopping. You could also rent bikes for cheap and explore more of the coastline between Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica.
