Are there still movie theaters in LA worth leaving the couch for?

I have been streaming everything at home for a year and I am starting to think I am missing the point. Tickets are close to twenty dollars now and WeHo parking adds to it. Which theaters are actually worth getting dressed for, and which are just a big screen?

As the designated couch guy I will say Alamo Drafthouse at the Bloc downtown is the one that gets me out. They actually throw people out for talking or pulling a phone out, which sounds strict until you sit through a movie where nobody does it. Reserved seats, food brought to you, and the garage underneath means I am not circling 7th Street for twenty minutes. Worth the ticket to me.

The Egyptian on Hollywood Boulevard is my answer. After the restoration the room itself is the event, the courtyard, the ceiling, all of it, and they program real 70mm prints and older films instead of only new releases. I park at Hollywood and Highland and walk the two blocks. Nothing at home compares.

New Beverly on Beverly. They run 35mm prints, mostly double features and a double still costs about what one ticket costs at a mall theater.

First come, first served for most shows.

Nuart on Santa Monica Boulevard is fifteen minutes from me and it is the only one I bother with anymore. One screen, real programming, and you can usually find a spot on the side streets instead of paying a garage. Let me be honest, the big chain houses are just a loud living room.

The Aero on Montana is my whole answer. It is a five minute drive, the programming is old classics and director nights, and you walk out into Montana Avenue for a drink after instead of a parking structure.

I have been going since before the couch was even an option ^^ Still my favorite room in the city.

Vista Theatre Los Feliz. Egyptian vibe, good seats, better prices than the chains and the neighborhood is actually pleasant.

I would go for New Beverly as well. Makes you remember why film exists. 35mm only, QT books a lot of it, cheap tickets. Better than IMAX.

Alamo Drafthouse DTLA. Recliners plus food and drinks brought to you. They actually enforce no phones/talking. Programming mixes new stuff with weird repertory. Just such a unique vibe..

Feels like one of the most American places whenever I go. I like that one a lot.

One of the best vintage theatres in Los Angeles. Glad to see that they are still here.

I honestly never heard of that one, but it looks interesting. I love places with that old-school vibe. I haven't been to any theater in forever.

I really appreciate you guys.
