A friend is looking at a place in Westchester and asked me straight up if the planes drive you crazy. I am in Marina del Rey and I genuinely stopped noticing them lol.
So is that an adjustment thing or did I just break? And which pockets are the actually loud ones?
Inglewood here. You get used to it. Ask if the place got soundproofing windows.
Go stand on the actual street at 6:30 in the morning before signing anything. That is the only test that matters. Most people tune it out in about two months.
Worth knowing the noise is already priced in. Comparable homes under the approach path trade lower than the same square footage a mile north, so if she is renting she is being paid for the inconvenience whether she realizes it or not.
Resale is the other side of that coin. I passed on a lovely place in Westchester years ago for exactly this reason, though I have friends there who adore it and would not leave for anything.
Atwater sits under the Burbank traffic and we get news helicopters on top of it. You adapt. The leaf blowers at seven are worse.
I am over by Motor Ave and the freeway is louder than the planes. A friend in Del Rey swears heavier curtains and a white noise machine changed her sleep completely.
I have been in the Marina for years and I will defend it every time. Yes, you hear them. You also hear boats and gulls and not much else, and that is a trade I would make again.
The pockets I would think twice about are Lennox and the parts of Westchester right off Sepulveda near the end of the runway. Everything north of Manchester toward Playa Vista is very livable.
Tell her to sit on the balcony for an hour before she signs. If she still likes the place after that, she is fine. Most of us stopped hearing it a long time ago.
That is why I decided against Playa Del Rey back then. The agent showed me some places, but the noise bothered me.
I lived close to LAX before and soundproofing windows make all the difference.
It really depends on what “close” to LAX means. I wouldn’t want to live within a one mile radius of LAX. 2 miles would be fine.
I think 2+ miles and you don’t need soundproof windows anymore.
At least not for the airplane noise.
I lived close to an airport once, approximately one mile away. The noise wasn’t really noticeable as we had good windows.
I sleep with earplugs most of the time because I wake up easily. I didn’t have any issues back then.
It’s really not a big deal. A lot of these apartments have the right windows installed because they are close to the airport.
Being outdoors is a different thing. You get used to it.
