Everyone I know who moves here ends up in Palms, what is the appeal?

I lived in Culver City with roommates for about half a year, so Palms was right next door. People kept moving there on purpose, not as a consolation prize. Rent was kinder than Santa Monica, food was walkable, and the Expo stop made the westside feel less stuck. If you already live in LA, what is the real appeal? Price, location, or something I missed while I was one neighborhood over.

Jackson Market on Jackson Ave is the tell. You get a sandwich, sit on the back patio, and it feels like a neighborhood instead of a cut-through. That corner is why people stay.

Baja California Tacos on Venice Blvd. Carne asada, cheap, and I am in and out. Palms works because dinner does not have to be a project.

Mr. Sate on Motor is my whole Palms argument. Indonesian, late enough for a remote day that ran long, and I can walk it without making a freeway decision. Palms is not pretty the way Venice is pretty. It is the version of LA where you stay in, game, then actually go get food without a 25 minute drive. That is the appeal for me.

The Dough Room on Overland is the one I send westside friends to when they act like Palms is just apartments. Pizza, casual, and you can park without turning it into a night. I still live in Santa Monica, so I am not moving, but I get why people land there. You sit between Culver, Sawtelle, and the Expo, and you are not paying Palisades money for the privilege.

I looked at Palms when I was comparing rents to Koreatown. The Expo stop is the part that sold people I know. You can work from home, walk Culver, and still get downtown without sitting on the 10. I stayed in Ktown because the food at 1am is better, but Palms is the practical answer if you want westside access without westside rent.

I will be honest. Palms is not a scene. That is the point. Irish Times on Motor is a regular bar, not a production. Rent is still high because this is Los Angeles, but you are not paying WeHo prices to live next to a club you do not go to. The appeal is you can live like a person. Grocery, a bar, the Expo, Culver in ten minutes. People who move there are usually done performing a neighborhood.

The picture below was taken at Irish Times. I honestly love Palms and lived there for many years. My best friend still lives there as well. It’s just a good neighborhood. True, not much going on in terms of partying, but I don’t care about that.

It feels safe and it’s pretty clean. You got decent restaurants, grocery stores.. pretty much everything you need for day to day life.

I feel like Palms is just perfectly located. Not too far from the beach, tram connection, next to Culver City. You don’t hear people say “let’s go to Palms and party”. It’s not the neighborhood for that. I wouldn’t have a problem living there.

If you already live in LA, location is the appeal. People move to Palms because it’s still a renter neighborhood with actual options. You've got older buildings under rent control and newer boxes with parking.

Culver City next door has the restaurants. Palms has apartments people can actually get into. Just the version of the Westside that still works if you’re not buying a house.
