Moved here from abroad a little while ago. IT guy. The usual stack of “I can keep the lights on, write the ugly glue code, and pretend the YAML makes sense.” Backend, cloud-ish, some on-call scars, enough production incidents that I now flinch when Slack pings after 10pm.
Came to LA to actually make a living instead of just staring at job posts from another timezone. Reality check incoming: the ATS black hole is real, half the “senior” roles want 8 years of a framework that shipped 3 years ago, and every other listing is “fast-paced environment / wear many hats / we’re a family.” Translation: understaffed, no docs, and someone will ping you on Saturday.
Also still figuring out the city part. Traffic is not a meme. It’s not as bad as I expected though. Everything is still somehow moving. Rent is taking its cut.. but at least I have a roof over my head.
One of the things I look forward to is AI. Yeah it takes a lot of coding jobs, but it also opens new doors.
I reacted with “” because that name fits your introduction. I hope you settle in soon.
In regards to the job search.. Search for the hiring manager, not just recruiters. Try to find individual company career pages instead of another Indeed search result. These two steps speed up the process.
