We literally got the Autobahn with no speed limit in Germany. Yet I am scared whenever I see highways with 6+ lanes in Los Angeles. Is there anything I should know or avoid here? I will be renting a midsize car from Hertz (LAX).

I lived in Germany as well. Just keep a distance when you see bumped up cars. You are allowed to make a right-turn on red (after stopping) unless a sign says it’s forbidden. Watch out for parking signs and street cleaning. They can be confusing to say the very least. You can overtake a car on the right lane. Avoid carpool lanes whenever you drive alone.
Enjoy your trip. Hertz is a pretty decent company. Don’t take any unnecessary upgrades.

If you’re used to driving on the Autobahn, you’ll be fine.. just in a different way.
LA highways look scary because they are wide, but:

Speeds are usually slower due to traffic

Lanes are clearly marked
-
Drivers are used to tourists and rental cars
The main difference is constant merging and exits. Just use your turn signals properly.

As someone who drives in LA daily.. the freeways look intimidating, but they’re predictable.
Most locals drive fast but not aggressively. They let you merge if you signal (at least 90%) and they expect you to keep moving (don’t hesitate too long).
Honestly, the hardest part for tourists is parking and navigation, not the driving itself.

My brother told me that L.A. is actually one of the best cities to drive in when he came over for the first time. He had no issues at all.
