In LA, everyone has a screenplay, a podcast, or a “startup idea.” It’s just that most of the time all three are unemployed.

An Angeleno invites you over and says, “It’s easy, just take the canyon.” Forty minutes later you’re white-knuckling a one-lane road behind a Prius doing 18, a coyote staring at you like you’re the tourist, and your host texts, “You close? I just got in the sauna.”

In L.A., a first date isn’t “Hi, I’m Alex.” It’s a soft launch: name, pronouns, neighborhood, attachment style, and whether they live east or west of the 101, because geography is also an identity now.

Oh the NY vs L.A. battle?

In New York, “Let’s grab dinner” means a restaurant at 8. In LA, “Let’s grab dinner” means a 6-week group chat, three dietary restrictions & someone suggesting we just do a hike instead.

In NY, “I’m in the industry” means finance, media, or lying. In LA, “I’m in the industry” means they once held a boom mic and still put “actor” in their bio.

An Angeleno will spend an hour explaining why they don’t own a car anymore, then ask if you can pick them up from a place that is, geographically, still Los Angeles, but spiritually so far it might as well be another time zone.
