I keep defaulting to the same Hollywood Peruvian names and I do not think that is the ceiling anymore. Where are you going in Los Angeles for ceviche and lomo saltado that is actually worth sitting down for? I am in Koreatown so Melrose is easy, but I will drive if the food is the reason.
Nobody around me talks about Peruvian Bowl and I do not get it. It is inside Gingerbread Court off Ocean Front Walk in Venice, so you walk past it constantly and never see the sign.
Get the lomo saltado bowl. The fries come buried in the sauce, it runs about a normal lunch price, and I have not walked out disappointed once.
Try Mamele's Peruvian Restaurant on Venice. Really great tallarin saltado. Maybe not the prettiest place, but the food is amazing.
Really enjoyed Pasacana in DTLA. The place has a great atmosphere without feeling overly formal and the Persian food was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. Everything we tried was well seasoned, and the portions were generous without being too much.
Service was friendly and attentive, and the overall vibe works just as well for a casual dinner as it does for a nicer night out. Definitely a great addition to Downtown LA's Persian food scene. I’d happily come back and try more of the menu.
Pontu on Ocean Park Blvd deserves a mention if you are already on the Westside. Small room, easy to drive straight past, and the ceviche is the reason I go back rather than the usual suspects.
I have been twice now and it went into the rotation immediately. Go early on a weekend, there are not many tables.
Merka Saltao on Main in Culver City is bowls and burritos, not a white tablecloth, and the lomo saltado bowl is the order. I end up there when I am already on the Westside. Small, easy to miss from the street, and I have not had a dull plate yet.
Tajrish Kabob on Washington in Marina. Cozy and relaxing atmosphere.
The food is great. I would never have found that place without my Peruvian friend.
Lonzo's on Washington in Culver City. Ceviche and the cocteles in those tall glasses, and they bake too, so it is not just another plate of rice. That is the one I actually finish.
Lonzo’s is great. If you’re willing to head to Culver City, it’s my pick too. Their lomo saltado has that smoky wok flavor you want, and the ceviche is really fresh. It feels a little more like a proper sit-down dinner than some of the Melrose spots.
The Hummingbird on Alvarado in Echo Park. Street parking is easier before 6, small ceviche bar, show up a little early. I get the ceviche and I am in and out.
