I have been in the Marina a long time and people still talk about Playa del Rey and Westchester like they are not there. Quiet streets, real beach access, prices under Santa Monica. Yes, there are planes. Is the noise the whole story, or is something else keeping people away?
I am right next door in Inglewood and I am in Westchester all the time. Dinah's on Sepulveda for the chicken and those pancakes, Truxton's when somebody wants a sit down, and the fields at the Westchester Rec Center are packed every weekend. It is not exciting, and that is exactly the point. People skip it because there is no scene there to post about, not because it is bad.
Westchester is where you end up when you are finally done being seen.
My friend moved from Palms to Playa del Rey and pays about the same for a bigger place with a view of the water. I was honestly a little jealous.
I drive Culver and Vista del Mar constantly and Playa del Rey at sunset is one of the best cheap nights in the city. Cantalini's has been on that corner forever and it still delivers, and Playa Provisions is right there when you want something nicer.
Nobody talks about it because there is no nightlife out there. I drive to WeHo for that, but a quiet dinner by the water is right here.
A friend of mine looked at buying in Westchester last year and the numbers were genuinely better than anything comparable closer to the water. The catch is the flight path, and buyers absolutely use it to negotiate. Lovely streets though, and the trees around Loyola are beautiful.
On the noise, LAX runs over ocean operations from midnight to six thirty in the morning, so departures and arrivals stay off the neighborhoods overnight. It is the daytime you feel, and it depends a lot on which block you are on.
Stand on the street for ten minutes before you sign anything. Two streets apart is a completely different experience.
I was looking into Playa Del Rey a couple years ago. Yeah you could hear the airplanes, but it’s nice over there and you get more bang for your buck.
I don’t know much about the Westchester area. I only pass through it on my way to LAX. ![]()
There isn’t much going on in Westchester. Huge areas without restaurants, bars etc.. mostly single family homes. That’s why people who don’t live there never really mention it. The only part that feels more “alive” is the one right next to the airport.
Let’s face it, most people don’t really spend much time in Playa Del Rey or Westchester unless they live there or very close.
I am not saying these are bad places, there is just no reason to drive down there.

I think people there are happy that we don’t come over to visit. Just let them be..
Yep, that was my point. ![]()
I wish everyone a blessed Labor Day.
