I’m looking for recommendations on the best grocery stores in Los Angeles. Whether it’s for everyday shopping, high-quality produce, organic options, international foods, or just the best overall experience, I’d love to hear your favorites.
What store do you prefer and why? Any specific locations or neighborhoods you’d recommend?

Trader Joe’s, no contest. The frozen sections alone are elite, and their private-label stuff is legitimately good. Plus, the parking lot chaos builds character.
Followed by Gelson’s. Clean, great produce, and the deli is actually solid. Worth the slightly higher prices if you don’t want to fight crowds.
H Mart in Koreatown. Unbeatable for Asian ingredients, and the prepared food section is dangerous (in the best way).
Service is absolutely superb as well.
Trader Joe’s is hands-down my favorite. I’ve tried pretty much every major chain in LA, and nothing else hits the same.
As Mercedes mentioned, the frozen section is elite. The orange chicken, the mandarin orange chicken (yes, different), the frozen mango, the cauliflower gnocchi… I could live off that aisle alone. Their private brands are amazing, and they somehow keep inventing new snacks that become instant obsessions (looking at you, Cookie Butter and those little unexpected cheddar crackers).
I also love that it’s not trying too hard. No overwhelming organic-everything atmosphere, no $18 juices, just solid everyday groceries with a few fun surprises. The wine selection is surprisingly decent for the price too. They have international beer as well.
Yeah, the parking lots are a war zone, and the lines can get ridiculous on weekends, but somehow that just feels like part of the experience at this point. Once you’re in, it’s efficient and the employees are usually pretty chill.
I’ve got three within a reasonable drive and I still end up at the same one every time.
Marukai on Pico in West LA is my go-to, hands down.
I’m biased because I live nearby, but even if I didn’t, I’d still make the trip. The selection of Japanese groceries is excellent, better prices than a lot of the other Japanese markets, and they carry a ton of stuff that’s hard to find elsewhere on the Westside. The prepared foods section is great. I rarely leave without grabbing some sushi, onigiri, or one of those bentos. I’ve found better deals here than at some of the bigger Asian markets. Tried Nijiya and Mitsuwa too, but I keep ending up back at Marukai.
I went there regularly before I moved to the Los Feliz area. One of the best stores in Los Angeles, no doubt. I don’t know a better one.
When it comes to bigger chains.. probably Trader Joes & Ralphs.
Ah, I feel you. That’s quite a distance, yes.
I think I would still travel there at least once a week (depending on what is around). 
I never heard of that one. I might check it out whenever I am in that area again.

Trader Joe’s is one of my favorites too. I’m getting hungry just by reading this.
Gelson’s has a great selection and plenty of parking. I feel, and that’s just my humble opinion, they are more than just slightly overpriced. That’s why I prefer Trader Joe’s for the daily things.
I tried Aldi as well. Not as good as Trader Joe’s, but the prices are almost unmatched.
Whole Foods (especially the one in Century City or Santa Monica). I know it’s expensive and gets a lot of hate for that, but the produce quality is consistently excellent.
I end up there when I want better meat, a wider organic selection, or just don’t feel like dealing with a chaotic parking lot. Not my everyday store, but when I’m stocking up for the week and want things to last, it’s the one I trust most.
Aldi is really taking over the US.
Trader Joe’s and Aldi are owned by the same brothers. Aldi is cheaper because there is less service. You pack up your own stuff like in Germany. Aldi has fewer fresh fruits and GMO food. Not saying they are bad, but I prefer Trader Joe’s.
Other stores offer organic food for way less. I guess that’s why people complain about it. My favorite is Target. They have everything I need, even a clothing section.
True, but for me it’s also about the variety sometimes. It saves me time which is at the end more valuable.
I love Sprouts Farmers Market. I bounce between a few stores, but Sprouts is the one I end up at most for everyday stuff. The produce is usually fresher and cheaper than at other high-end stores. They have a solid bulk section, and their private labels are pure quality. It’s clean, well-stocked, and doesn’t feel like a complete zoo most of the time.
The one near me has become my default when I need to grab normal groceries without overthinking it.
Same here. Sprouts or Trader Joe’s for me. I don’t need anything else.
I love their frozen section as well, like the frozen chicken and lamb. 
It’s just a bit too far away to go there more frequently.
