Hollywood and West Hollywood are very close geographically, but they feel quite different. Let me try to break it down for you.

Hollywood:

  • More touristy (Walk of Fame, attractions)

  • Busier and a bit chaotic

  • Can feel less clean in some areas

  • Mix of safe and less safe streets

West Hollywood:

  • More upscale and local-focused

  • Cleaner, trendier, and more walkable

  • Known for nightlife, restaurants, and shopping

  • Generally considered safer overall

Hollywood is actually a distinct or neighborhood of Los Angeles. West Hollywood is it’s own city, like Beverly Hills for example.

The vibe is definitely not the same. Hollywood is tourist-heavy, busy, a bit gritty in places.

West Hollywood is stylish, relaxed, more “LA lifestyle” feel.

If you want to explore attractions, go to Hollywood. I know it’s tempting as a tourist. If you want to enjoy your stay, stay in West Hollywood. You can easily travel to Hollywood for sightseeing’s and then come back to WeHo afterwards.

The only reason why I go to Hollywood is the Runyon Canyon. I went a couple of times to the Avalon too. Once you saw the Walk of Fame you will be happy to be back in West Hollywood. I feel sorry for every tourist who stays anywhere near that area around the Walk of Fame. This really has nothing to do with what the rest of L.A. is about. It’s the biggest tourist trap in entire Los Angeles.

Obviously Hollywood has some quieter areas too. That’s just not where most tourists go.

I agree West Hollywood is great, but Hollywood definitely has its advantages too, especially for first-time visitors.

If you stay in Hollywood, you’re right in the middle of iconic attractions like the TCL Chinese Theater, Hollywood Boulevard, easy access to the Hollywood Sign hikes, and so on. You can literally walk to a lot of these places, which is a big plus in a city like LA.

It’s also more affordable than West Hollywood in many cases plus well connected with public transportation (Metro Red Line).

Some parts can feel a bit rough, but there are nicer streets as well.

I would definitely go for West Hollywood if safety is a concern. Even Santa Monica Blvd feels calm compared to Hollywood.

Quick version for anyone trying to decide where to stay.

Hollywood is a neighborhood of the City of LA. Touristy, busy, a little gritty in spots. It is where the icons are, Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theater, easy access to the Hollywood Sign hikes and Runyon Canyon. Great for a first visit, mixed on safety street to street.

West Hollywood is its own city, like Beverly Hills. Cleaner, more upscale, walkable, better nightlife and food, and it generally feels safer. Even Santa Monica Blvd feels calm compared to Hollywood.

My rule, visit Hollywood for the attractions, stay in WeHo for the actual lifestyle. If safety is your main concern, WeHo wins.

I’d add that location matters a lot within Hollywood. Some parts are perfectly fine and some streets feel sketchy after dark. WeHo is definitely more consistent, especially around the main nightlife areas, I agree with that.

The Walk of Fame and Hollywood Sign are things most tourists want to see, but after you’ve done them once, I’d much rather be sitting somewhere on Sunset or Santa Monica Blvd in WeHo.
