Every few weeks somebody in my building asks where to get donuts and it turns into an argument, so I want to see where this one lands. I walk to Daily Donuts on Hillhurst most Saturdays because they open early and the buttermilk bar is still warm around seven, and a dozen there does not cost what the newer places charge. Colorado Donuts in Eagle Rock is the other one I will actually drive to, mostly because they are open at four in the morning.
So which shop is yours, and what do you order when you get there?
Oh this is my thread!! California Donuts on West 3rd at Western is the one I drag everybody to, it is open twenty four hours and the blueberry cake donut is the best in the city, I will fight about that one.
The line on a Friday night is real but it moves fast, and you are paying like three dollars for something enormous. Go in the morning instead and you walk right up to the window. I keep meaning to try the panda ones for my niece and I always end up ordering the same two anyway.
Colorado Donuts gets my vote and I am about four minutes from it. Nothing about that place is trying to be anything, it is a counter in a strip mall on Colorado Blvd and the apple fritter is the size of a dinner plate for under three bucks. I have watched half the Eastside get priced out and repainted in the last ten years, and that shop has not changed one thing about itself. That counts for a lot with me.
Primo's on Sawtelle. Been there since the fifties and the buttermilk bar is the only donut I actually want anymore. Let me be honest, the ones with cereal glued on top are not for me.
Flour Premium Doughnut inside the Rodeo Galleria on Western is my pick, and it is a five minute walk from my place. They are noticeably less sweet than the classic shops, the milk cream one is the whole reason to go, and it sells out by early afternoon on weekends. There is a real parking lot too, which in Koreatown is honestly half the decision. I bring a box to friends and it always lands well.
Randy's is literally down the street from me and I know it gets called a tourist thing, but the plain old fashioned in the morning is still right. Skip the giant donut photo and get inside before eight.
Monarch Donuts in Arcadia if you are ever out this way. I end up there after the early car meets because they open before anybody else does and the apple fritter holds up fine on a drive home. Ten minutes off the 210 and there is actual parking, which you cannot say about most of the good ones.
Westside represent, DK's Donuts on Santa Monica Blvd is my spot and has been for years now. They did the croissant donut thing before everyone copied it, but honestly I order a plain glazed and a coffee and sit outside with it.
Adding Daily Donuts to the rotation though. I never make it that far east in the morning, but you all have me curious now ^^
Way better than anything inside LAX. Worth stopping by. Some of the best donuts in town. They got decent coffee in case you are tired. On top of that great prices.
