How long did you need to feel at home, find friends or adapt to the lifestyle?
Not that long actually. I moved from Germany to Los Angeles when I hit a low point in my life. I found friends after just a couple of months and I still consider them my best friends. Almost all of them were immigrants from Mexico or Europe too.
Sometimes I dreamed about being back in Germany and I woke up sweating.
I don’t say life in Los Angeles was always easy. It just felt right. I was just happier. It felt like it’s the place I wanted to be. The weather played a big role too. I don’t know, but I love this city. It’s unique.
Honestly, it took me about a year to feel somewhat settled. The first few months felt exciting but also overwhelming at the same time.
Everything in LA feels spread out, so even simple things take effort to figure out. Making friends was the hardest part for me, especially since people are always busy or flaky. I went through a phase where I questioned if I made the right move.
After some time, I started finding my routines and places I liked. Once I found “my” coffee shop and gym, things got easier. Friendships also started forming more naturally over time.
I think LA doesn’t click instantly for all of us , it grows on you. Now I can’t really imagine living anywhere else.
Honestly still don’t feel fully settled and it’s been 2 years. ![]()
That said, after a year things started to fall in place.
About a year, maybe 1 1/2. The hardest part was leaving family and friends behind. I guess that’s the downside of any move.
Not gonna lie, LA didn’t feel like home until I found “my people.” That was the real turning point.
After 6 month I started to feel more at home.
