Something shifted this year and I want to know if it is only me noticing. Saturday on Santa Monica Blvd has turned into a line situation, forty minutes at the door, twenty dollar drinks, and a crowd that is mostly not from here.
The last three Wednesdays I have had a better night for half the money. Riviera 31 at the Sofitel does its live salsa and blues nights with a cover around twenty dollars and you can actually hear the band. Laugh Factory on Sunset runs shows all week and midweek you can still get a decent seat.
So, honest question for the WeHo regulars and the people who drive in on weekends. Has the good night moved to midweek, or am I just getting old and calling my own bedtime a trend?
You are not getting old, the math changed. Saturday I am paying to stand in a line with people who flew in for it. Wednesday I park easy, walk in, and the bartender has time for me.
Riviera 31 midweek is exactly what you described, the band actually gets heard. If I want something rougher I drive downtown to the Slipper Clutch, but that is a different night entirely.
My girls and I stopped fighting the weekend altogether. We do Wednesday at Bibo Ergo Sum on Robertson, get a real table without begging for it, and the cocktails are worth what they charge. On a Saturday we would be shouting at each other in a doorway. Midweek is simply the grown up version.
I come over from Pasadena so the weekend traffic decides it for me. Wednesday I am there in thirty minutes, Saturday it is an hour plus parking roulette.
Comes down to the lineup though. If someone good is playing I will do any weeknight, and Gold Diggers in Hollywood on a random midweek night has beaten most Saturdays I paid cover for. Bar Chelou by me is the easy fallback.
