Is it possible to live in L.A. without a car? For everything like going grocery shopping and the daily commute to work.
It’s possible, but your entire life has to be designed around it. If you live and work in the same area (like Santa Monica, DTLA, or maybe West Hollywood), it’s doable. You’ll rely heavily on walking, Uber/Waymo, and the occasional Metro. The bus system is one of the most extended in the US. But the moment you need to go across the city, it becomes a whole mission. LA just isn’t built for convenience without a car. So yes, it’s possible, but it wouldn’t be for me.
Only if you live, work, and socialize in the same area. You can survive without a car in LA, but you won’t fully enjoy LA without one. It’s not like NY (driving felt more comfy in L.A., NY has amazing public transportation).
I know a few people who do it and they make it work, but they’re very intentional. They chose apartments near work, gyms, grocery stores, etc. They also budget for Ubers regularly. It’s not impossible, it just requires more effort and planning than most cities. You would need to decide if it’s worth the extra effort.
Technically yes, realistically… kinda no. You can survive without a car, but you’re sacrificing a lot of freedom.
That sounds like too much of a hassle. I strongly suggest people just get a car here.
