I would contact some agents or real estate companies directly. Sometimes that means you don't have to compete with too many others.
If you already know you want to stay in LA permanently, I’d start applying before your current stay ends. Have your ID, proof of income, bank statements and references ready to go. Good two-bedrooms can get multiple applications pretty quickly, so being able to apply right after a viewing definitely helps.
I’d also focus on 1-2 neighborhoods instead of searching all over LA.

Plus, offer them a little signing bonus to speed things up. A friend gave that advice back in the day. Sounded a bit strange, but it worked sometimes.
That helps. One thing I’d add: don’t automatically dismiss listings that have been up for a few weeks. Those can actually be your best opportunity to negotiate. If the unit is still available, ask whether there’s any flexibility on the rent, deposit, parking, or move-in date. Worst they can say is no.

We won't be able to compete if everyone does this. 
Since you’ve already been in LA for a few months, use that to your advantage. Pick the area based on where you actually spend your time, not just where you found the nicest apartment online. A beautiful place with a terrible daily commute gets old VERY quickly here.
I’d rather pay a little more and live 10 minutes from work than spend two hours of my day sitting in traffic.
