Renters insurance in LA, who did you actually go with and what are you paying?

My landlord handed me a letter saying I have to carry renters insurance with 100k liability and I have honestly never had a policy in my life. I share the apartment with two other girls, so I am also trying to work out if we each need our own.

Who did you actually go with? What are you paying a month?

Lemonade for me, 13 dollars a month and I set the whole thing up on my phone!! And you each need your own, it only covers the person on it.

Geico, eleven bucks a month.

State Farm bundled with the car, about fifteen a month.

The 100k liability line is standard now, almost every lease I have seen in the last couple of years asks for it, and most management companies also want to be listed as additional interest so they get told if you cancel. That part costs nothing, just send them the declarations page.

The number that actually matters is your personal property limit, not the liability. Most people take 20k or 30k without ever adding up what they own, and then find out the deductible is 1000. Price both, the gap between a 500 and a 1000 deductible is usually a couple of dollars a month.

One thing people miss, earthquake damage is not in a standard renters policy. Separate CEA renters coverage runs a few hundred a year, which is either obviously worth it or obviously not depending on how you sleep.

I bundled mine onto my auto policy and it was the easy call. Renters came out around 14 a month, but the multi policy discount took more than that off the car side, so it effectively paid for itself.

If you already have car insurance, call your own agent before you shop around. Ten minutes on the phone, and you keep everything on one bill.

I just rented a new place and they didn’t require me to show any proof of insurance.

Might be worth checking again.

No one ever approached me over the last years. So I am not going to approach them. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Right, I am pretty sure they already have insurances in place. I am hiding away until they want me to pay it myself and actually approach me.

The next rent increase is coming anyways.

You do not each need a full separate policy unless the lease says every occupant must be a named insured. One policy can list all three of you.

That’s what we did with Progressive a few years ago: $100k liability, $20k contents, $19/month split three ways.

Okay, that makes sense.

It also makes it easier. :raising_hands:t2: I guess that’s the way to go now. Thank you.
