Looking for the real deal in LA, not just a steak sandwich with cheese, but an actual Philly-style cheesesteak. What’s the best one you’ve had in Los Angeles?
Preferably with thinly sliced ribeye, proper Amoroso-style roll (or the closest thing), and the option for Whiz or provolone.
South Philly Experience is really good. If you haven’t tried them, I recommend you do. Philly’s Best Cheesesteaks is decent as well. I ordered a couple of times via Uber Eats. Both have a wide range of things you can add.
Boo’s in Koreatown. Amoroso rolls, proper chopped steak, Whiz if you want it. Nothing else in LA comes close, at least in my area.
Make sure you order for pick-up. That really makes the difference. I saw some people complain because of Uber Eats deliveries and soggy rolls.
That would’ve been my recommendation as well.
As someone who studied in Philly, most places out here are just steak sandwiches pretending to be cheesesteaks. South Philly Experience on Pico is the closest I’ve found. Real Amoroso rolls, thin ribeye, and they actually know what “wit” means.
Boo’s is solid too, but South Philly feels more authentic to me. Matu is delicious, but it’s more of a fancy LA version, great meat, just not traditional.
Honestly just go to Philly’s Best on Melrose. Super consistent, good portion size, and the rolls hold up. They never disappoint.
I have tried a bunch and this one keeps me coming back.
I tried most of the usual suspects. Boo’s is fine but overrated at this point. South Philly Experience is better, but if you’re willing to drive a bit, West Coast Cheesesteaks in Glendora is slept on. Properly chopped steak, good roll, and they don’t skimp. Feels closer to the real thing than a lot of the LA spots.
We went there once. Their cheesesteaks are indeed very tasty.
Just not worth the travel time.. otherwise, we would go there more frequently.
Sonny’s on Sunset Blvd is actually a pizza place, which offers a cheesesteak as well. Their Philly cheesesteak is loaded with Wagyu beef, Cooper Sharp cheese, grilled onions, and roasted peppers on a freshly baked bread. Rather on the expensive side. Never tried their pizza so far.
Wagyu beef on a cheesesteak is wild. Wagyu cheesesteak from a pizzeria is even wilder. But hey, that’s L.A… ![]()

I am totally fine with thin-sliced ribeye steak, melted cheese (Provolone, American, or Cheez Whiz), and caramelized onions.
I don’t expect or need a Korean BBQ-style experience whenever I crave a cheesesteak. Neither does my wallet. ![]()
I am with you here. They are the best on a good day.
