Moving to Los Angeles looks amazing online, but the reality can be very different.
What surprised you the most after living in LA?
It could be about cost of living, people, traffic, lifestyle, or anything unexpected.

One thing that really surprised me about living in Los Angeles is how different it feels from what you see online. Hollywood focuses on the glamour, many YouTubers for clicks on the homeless.
Before moving here, I thought LA would be all beaches, sunshine, and constant excitement. But the reality is much more mixed. Traffic is a huge part of daily life, and getting anywhere can take way longer than expected. You get used to it though and there are some improvements in terms of public transportation. I love Waymo as well.
Another big surprise was the cost of living in Los Angeles. Rent, food, and even basic services are significantly more expensive than most people expect, especially near popular areas like Santa Monica or West Hollywood.
What also stood out is how spread out the city is. Los Angeles doesn’t feel like a single city, but more like a collection of different neighborhoods, each with its own vibe. Where you live really shapes your experience.
At the same time, there are a lot of positives. The weather is consistently good, there’s amazing food from all cultures, the nature & hikes are breathtaking. Don’t trust all these YouTubers who go to Skid Row and act like all of L.A. looks like that. It doesn’t.
Overall, living in Los Angeles is not as glamorous as Hollywood paints it, not as bad as some influencers suggest (for clickbait). It can be really rewarding if you understand what to expect. I would never switch L.A. for NY to be honest. I love L.A..
Honestly, one of the best surprises about living in Los Angeles is how much opportunity and variety there is.
You can completely shape your lifestyle depending on what you are into. Whether it’s beaches like Santa Monica, hiking in the hills, or exploring different neighborhoods, LA has something for everyone. The food scene in Los Angeles is also incredible. I would even go so far as to say it’s the best in the world. You can find some of the best tacos, Korean BBQ, street food, and international cuisine all in one city. On top of that, Los Angeles can actually feel very comfortable and laidback, despite its reputation for being chaotic.
